Israel’s military is investigating whether Hamas’ top commander in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, was one of three militants killed in a recent operation.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed Thursday that its forces were working to verify the identity of the individuals killed during a firefight in southern Gaza, near Rafah.
Prominent Israeli journalists, citing intelligence sources, have speculated that Sinwar may have been killed in what was initially believed to be a routine clash with militants.
The unconfirmed reports suggest Israeli forces spotted and neutralized three armed men on Wednesday.
Upon inspection, one of the bodies was believed to resemble Sinwar, a central figure on Israel’s target list since Hamas launched its brutal October 7 cross-border attack, killing over 1,200 Israelis and taking 251 hostages.
The IDF, while cautious about confirming Sinwar’s death, acknowledged the possibility in a brief statement: “We are checking the possibility that one of the terrorists was Yahya Sinwar. At this stage, the identity of the terrorists cannot be confirmed.”
Adding to the speculation, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant posted cryptic imagery on social media, featuring photos of slain terrorist leaders like Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas’ Mohammed el-Deif, with red crosses over their faces.
A blank space with a red cross suggested another key militant’s death.
Gallant further referenced a biblical quote, “And they chased the enemy…,” paired with his own vow to pursue and eliminate terrorists.
The operation targeting Sinwar unfolded as tensions between Israel and Hamas escalated further.
Earlier that day, the IDF launched an airstrike on a former school building in Jabalia, northern Gaza, killing at least 15 people, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
The strike, which targeted a compound used by Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants, raised concerns over civilian casualties in the war-torn region.
The IDF defended the operation, claiming the building had been repurposed into a combat facility used to stage attacks on Israeli forces.
“Dozens of terrorists from the Hamas and Islamic Jihad organizations were present,” the military said, publishing a list of names of the purported militants killed.
The mounting civilian toll in Gaza has drawn international concern, including from the Biden administration.
In a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, U.S. officials urged Israel to improve humanitarian conditions in Gaza or risk the possibility of American military aid being withheld.
While Washington acknowledged Hamas’ use of civilian infrastructure for military purposes, it stressed that innocent civilians must be protected.
The Biden administration has also expressed discontent over Israel’s handling of its military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
With over 2,300 casualties in Lebanon due to Israeli airstrikes, U.S. officials warned that Israel’s parallel offensive risks further destabilizing the region.
Despite growing pressure, Israeli forces continue to pound Gaza and Lebanon with airstrikes. The Gaza health ministry has reported over 42,400 deaths since the conflict began, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. The IDF, however, remains steadfast in its claim of self-defense against Hamas, a group designated as a terrorist organization by both Israel and the U.S.
As Israel intensifies its operations, the question of Yahya Sinwar’s fate looms large. If confirmed, his death would mark a significant blow to Hamas’ leadership.
