Pam Bondi, a prominent Trump ally and former Florida Attorney General, has been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as U.S. Attorney General.
The announcement came shortly after former Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew himself from consideration for the role.
“Pam is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter,” Trump declared on Truth Social.
“She will do a terrific job as Attorney General!”
Pam Bondi, 59, has a long history with Trump, having defended him during his first Senate impeachment trial.
Her nomination, which now heads to the Senate for confirmation, underscores her trusted position in Trump’s inner circle.
Pam Bondi’s association with Trump stretches back over a decade. In 2013, the Trump Foundation donated $25,000 to her reelection campaign as Florida Attorney General.
Around that time, her office opted not to join a lawsuit against Trump University, prompting allegations of a conflict of interest.
Both Pam Bondi and Trump denied any connection between the donation and her office’s decision.
During Trump’s 2016 campaign, Bondi emerged as a vocal supporter, famously leading chants of “lock her up” against Hillary Clinton at the Republican National Convention.
Her role as co-chair of Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign further cemented her position as a key ally.
Bondi’s career as Florida’s Attorney General spanned from 2010 to 2019, during which she was reelected for a second term in 2014.
Upon leaving office, she joined Ballard Partners, a prominent lobbying firm.
There, she represented high-profile clients such as Amazon, General Motors, Fidelity, and the Florida Sheriffs’ Association.
Her work extended beyond U.S. borders. In 2019, Bondi registered as a foreign agent for the government of Qatar, providing consulting services on anti-human trafficking issues.
Bondi was among the attorneys who defended Trump during his first impeachment trial in 2020, which ended in acquittal.
She remained active in Trump’s orbit, taking part in preemptive election lawsuits in battleground states during the 2024 election cycle.
Currently, Bondi serves as chair of the Center for Litigation and co-chair of the Center for Law and Justice at the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank founded by former Trump administration officials.
Trump’s decision to nominate Bondi continues his pattern of appointing trusted allies to senior roles.
However, her confirmation as Attorney General will depend on Senate approval. Bondi has not yet commented publicly on her nomination.
