Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) reacted on Saturday to the controversial report concerning Mark Robinson, the Republican candidate for governor in North Carolina, who has been accused of making inflammatory comments on a porn site years ago.
Vance acknowledged the gravity of the situation but remained cautious, emphasizing that “allegations aren’t necessarily reality.”
In an interview with NBC Philadelphia, Vance weighed in on the GOP North Carolina Gubernatorial candidate’s future in the gubernatorial race, stating, “It is ultimately up to Mark Robinson and North Carolina whether he’s going to be their governor and whether he wants to stay in the race.”
He added that while the allegations are “pretty far out there,” it’s essential to allow the situation to “play out” before drawing conclusions.
Robinson, who currently serves as North Carolina’s lieutenant governor, has come under fire following a CNN report that detailed alleged racist and offensive comments made on a porn website years ago.
Among the most shocking claims are that Robinson referred to himself as a “black NAZI,” expressed support for slavery, and used a racial slur to describe Martin Luther King Jr.
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, the NC GOP candidate has categorically denied the claims and stated that he will not be withdrawing from the race.
The North Carolina Republican Party quickly backed him, releasing a statement on Thursday to reaffirm that he has “categorically denied the allegations.”
When asked if he believed the denial by NC Republican Gubernatorial candidate, Vance was non-committal, stating, “I don’t not believe him, I don’t believe him — I just think that you have to let these things sometimes play out in the court of public opinion.”
Vance suggested that further investigation would likely be conducted, both by the media and other parties.
The controversy has created ripples within the Republican Party, with some members voicing concerns over Robinson’s candidacy.
However, NBC News reports that there are no plans for former President Donald Trump, a vocal supporter of Robinson, to formally withdraw his endorsement.
Trump, who once lauded Robinson as “Martin Luther King on steroids,” has yet to comment on the recent developments.
When asked about his own plans, Vance confirmed that his ticket would not be campaigning alongside Robinson in North Carolina.
The Ohio senator added that Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump are locked in a tight race in North Carolina, a crucial swing state in the 2024 election.
North Carolina, a pivotal battleground state, is seen as critical for Republicans aiming to win the White House in 2024.
Trump narrowly won the state in 2020, but Democrats, including Vice President Harris, have been intensifying their efforts to flip North Carolina blue in the upcoming election.
Recent polling shows the gubernatorial race between Robinson and North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein is also fiercely competitive, with Robinson trailing behind his Democratic opponent.
The Republican candidate’s future in North Carolina’s gubernatorial race remains uncertain as allegations mount, but for now, he is staying in the race.
Whether the controversy will impact the state’s political landscape in the long run remains to be seen.
