Trump's DEA Administrator pick Chad Chronister
In a major announcement, President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Chad Chronister as the next Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
The move signals Trump’s intensified focus on combating the nation’s ongoing drug crisis, particularly the flow of fentanyl and other illicit substances across the U.S.-Mexico border.
Trump made the announcement Saturday via his Truth Social platform, praising Chronister’s extensive law enforcement career.
“For over 32 years, Sheriff Chad Chronister has served the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, and received countless commendations and awards for keeping his community SAFE,” Trump stated.
Chronister, who currently serves as the sheriff of Hillsborough County, Florida, has held his position since 2017.
He brings a wealth of experience, including leadership roles in the FBI National Academy and Florida’s Regional Domestic Security Task Force.
The appointment of Chronister, the long-serving Republican sheriff from Florida, comes as part of a broader reshuffle of the Justice Department.
Trump has also selected former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to head the Department of Justice.
The duo is expected to form a united front in Trump’s mission to “secure the Border” and curb drug trafficking.
“As DEA Administrator, Chad will work with our great Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to secure the Border, stop the flow of Fentanyl, and other Illegal Drugs, across the Southern Border, and SAVE LIVES,” Trump emphasized.
In response to his nomination, Chronister expressed gratitude and a commitment to tackling the nation’s drug crisis.
“It is the honor of a lifetime to be nominated by President @realDonaldTrump to serve as the Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration, and I am deeply humbled by this opportunity to serve our nation,” he said.
If confirmed, Chronister will succeed Anne Milgram, who has led the DEA since 2021.
Milgram’s tenure has been marked by the agency’s efforts to combat the opioid epidemic, which she recently described as costing the U.S. a “generation” during a “60 Minutes” interview.
The DEA, with its 10,000-strong workforce, plays a pivotal role in enforcing America’s drug laws.
Under Chronister’s leadership, the agency is expected to intensify its fight against the opioid crisis, focusing on disrupting cartels responsible for the fentanyl trade.
Chronister’s nomination aligns with Trump’s broader campaign promises to address illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
This week, Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada to pressure them into taking stronger action on these issues.
In separate diplomatic moves, Trump engaged in conversations with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and hosted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago.
Both meetings were described as constructive, hinting at Trump’s multi-pronged approach to tackling the drug crisis and border security.
