Trump Vs Biden: Voters in Michigan and Pennsylvania are gearing up for the general election with mixed feelings about their presidential candidates, according to recent CNN polling conducted by SSRS.
With both states having flipped from red to blue in the 2020 presidential election, the sentiment among voters reveals a significant level of dissatisfaction with the current options.
The surveys conducted among registered voters depict a dead-even race between Donald Trump and Joe Biden in Pennsylvania, each garnering 46% of the vote.
However, Trump holds a notable lead in Michigan, with 50% of the vote compared to Biden’s 42%.
The polls suggest that Biden’s winning coalition from 2020 may be more solidified in Pennsylvania than in Michigan.
In Pennsylvania, Biden leads among women, voters of color, college graduates, and independents.
However, in Michigan, Biden faces a tighter race among women and voters of color, while trailing significantly among independents and young voters.
Although most voters claim to have already made their decisions, about a quarter in each state express openness to changing their minds before the election.
This segment could play a crucial role in determining the outcome in these pivotal states.
Certain key subgroups, particularly independents and younger voters, show significant indecision.
In Michigan, 45% of independents and 41% of voters younger than 35 are less than solidly decided, while in Pennsylvania, it’s 32% of independents and 34% of younger voters.
Less than half of voters in either state express satisfaction with their choices in the presidential race.
Michigan has seen a decline in satisfaction since a fall survey, with independents experiencing the steepest drop.
Majorities of voters in both states anticipate fundamental changes under a second term for Trump, while only about a quarter say the same about a second Biden term.
The race is shaping up more as a referendum on the former president than on the current one.
Despite Biden’s underwater approval ratings in both states, he retains support from double-digit shares of those who disapprove of his work as president, contrasting with Trump’s performance in the 2020 election.
A hypothetical four-way matchup suggests significant support for Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., in both states, indicating dissatisfaction with the major candidates.
Voters in both states prefer Trump over Biden on handling key issues such as the economy, immigration, and the situation in Israel and Gaza.
Biden is favored on handling abortion policies and is more trusted than Trump in Pennsylvania on handling democracy in the US.
Both states have Democratic-held US Senate seats on their ballots this fall. Opinions diverge on whether a GOP takeover of the Senate would be beneficial for the country.
Both Biden and Trump are viewed unfavorably by majorities of Michigan and Pennsylvania voters, with a significant portion holding an unfavorable view of both.
