Team USA gymnast Suni Lee added a bronze medal to her impressive 2024 Olympics collection by finishing third in the uneven bars final in Paris.
Lee, known for her mastery of this event, scored 14.500, lower than her typical performance.
The reduced score was partly due to a routine that lacked the difficulty level she usually showcases. Still, her performance was enough to secure a spot on the podium.
The uneven bars final saw Suni Lee as the only American gymnast competing after her teammate Simone Biles narrowly missed qualifying.
Lee’s routine, while not her most challenging, demonstrated her ability to stay composed under pressure.
Despite missing some key connections that could have boosted her score, she held her own as seven other competitors tried to surpass her mark.
Lee’s routine was affected by the no-warmup rule in the individual finals, a change she and her coach Jess Graba criticized as “dangerous” and disruptive.
This lack of preparation time contributed to the minor mistakes in her performance.
Despite these challenges, Lee’s resilience shone through, ensuring she remained a medal contender until the end.
This bronze medal is Suni Lee’s third at the Paris Games, following her gold in the individual all-around and silver in the team competition.
For Lee, the uneven bars hold special significance, making this medal particularly meaningful despite the lower score. “This medal probably means more to me than the all-around gold did, because bars is my thing,” Lee reflected.
The gold medal in the uneven bars was claimed by Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour with a score of 15.700, and China’s Qui Qiyan took silver with 15.000.
Lee’s ability to stay focused and secure a podium finish in such a competitive field highlights her enduring talent and determination.
