Simone Biles has added another remarkable achievement to her storied career by clinching the gold medal in the women’s gymnastics all-around final at the 2024 Olympics.
The 27-year-old gymnast delivered a stellar performance on Thursday night, becoming the oldest all-around champion since 1952, a feat that further solidifies her status as one of the greatest athletes of all time.
Biles started the competition with a bang, executing her signature Yurchenko double pike vault—a vault so complex that it was renamed in her honor in 2023 after she became the first female gymnast to land it in international competition.
Her flawless execution earned her a score of 15.766, setting the tone for the rest of the evening.
A minor mistake on the uneven bars, where she mistimed her Pak Salto and had to take an extra swing, briefly put her campaign at risk.
Despite this slip-up, Biles quickly regained her footing, posting a solid 14.566 on the balance beam.
Heading into the final rotation, she held a narrow lead of just 0.166 points over Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, her closest competitor.
Biles saved her best for last with a near-perfect floor exercise routine, scoring a 15.066. This clinched her sixth Olympic gold medal and her ninth overall, a record for American gymnasts.
With this victory, Biles has now joined an elite group of gymnasts, becoming the oldest all-around champion since Maria Gorokhovskaya won at the 1952 Helsinki Games at age 30.
Biles’ victory marks a triumphant comeback following her challenges at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she withdrew from the all-around final due to a severe case of the “twisties,” a mental block that affected her spatial awareness.
This setback forced her to prioritize her mental health, leading to Team USA teammate Suni Lee taking gold in that event.
Reflecting on her journey, Biles expressed her gratitude and disbelief at her success: “Three years ago, I never thought I’d step foot on a gymnastics floor again because of everything that had happened, but with the help of Cecile and Laurent [Landi], I got back in the gym and worked really hard mentally and physically. Even at 7 a.m. this morning, I saw my therapist … At the end of the day, it’s crazy that I’m in the conversation of greatest of all time athletes because I still think I’m Simone Biles from Spring, Texas, who loves to flip.”
Rebeca Andrade, Biles’ fiercest competitor, delivered a strong performance, starting with a stuck Cheng vault and maintaining her momentum throughout the competition.
Andrade ultimately secured the silver medal, adding to her collection of four Olympic medals and helping lead Team Brazil to a historic team bronze earlier in the week.
Biles’ victory also extends the American women’s all-around gold medal streak to six consecutive Games, a streak that began with Carly Patterson’s win in 2004.
Only two other women in history—Larisa Latynina and Vera Caslavska—have won the all-around title twice, placing Biles among the sport’s all-time greats.
Suni Lee, the 2020 all-around champion, finished with a bronze medal in the floor exercise, scoring 13.535.
Lee and Biles had already added to their impressive résumés by winning gold in the women’s team final earlier in the week.
Despite contemplating retirement after the Tokyo Olympics, Biles returned to the sport she loves, proving once again that she is a force to be reckoned with.
As Biles put it, “I don’t want to compete with Rebeca anymore—I’m tired,” she joked after the competition. “She’s way too close. I’ve never had an athlete that close, so it definitely put me on my toes and brought out the best athlete in me.”
