MILWAUKEE — Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R) stirred the political waters by invoking First Lady Jill Biden during her speech at the Republican National Convention.
In a speech filled with personal anecdotes and political jabs, Sanders recounted an experience from her tenure as former President Trump’s press secretary.
She shared a story about taking her son to work, contrasting it with First Lady Jill Biden’s support of President Joe Biden.
“When I was President Trump’s White House press secretary, I got the chance to take my 4-year-old son up to ‘Bring Your Kid to Work Day,’” Sanders said Tuesday from the main stage in Milwaukee.
“Much like Jill now drags Joe to ‘Bring Your Husband to Work Day,’” she added, drawing loud applause and laughter from the audience.
Some conservatives have criticized Jill Biden, suggesting she is overly eager to maintain her husband’s position amid debates about his age and fitness for office.
Sanders’s comment fed into these criticisms while highlighting the support and protection she received from Trump during her White House tenure.
Sanders’s speech was not just about jabs at the Bidens. She received praise from across the aisle for her delivery.
Democratic strategist Van Jones described her address as “the speech of the night,” noting its uplifting and personal nature.
Day 2 of the convention featured high-profile Republican figures, including Senate candidates, House leadership, and former rivals of Trump.
Sanders lauded Trump’s leadership and recounted his defense of her during her time as press secretary.
She mentioned instances where Trump stood by her during personal attacks from comedians and media personalities.
Sanders emphasized the difference in leadership styles between Trump and Biden, asserting that Republican governors have had to step up where Biden has failed.
“For the last four years, Republican governors have been leading that fight, and doing what Joe Biden refuses to do,” she said.
“We deployed the National Guard to the border. We cracked down on crime and drugs. We cut taxes to give hardworking Americans a break from Bidenflation. And we empowered Americans with universal school choice across the country.”
Highlighting Trump’s foreign policy, Sanders praised his tough stance on China, a theme that resonated throughout her speech.
“Trump was the first president in my lifetime to take a hard line against China,” she said.
“And I’m proud to be the first and only governor in the country to kick communist China off our farmland and out of my state.”
The RNC, continuing through Thursday, is set to formally nominate Trump as the Republican candidate for the 2024 election.
Wednesday’s theme, “Make America Strong Once Again,” will focus on foreign policy and national security, with speeches expected to criticize the Biden administration’s handling of these issues.
Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who had previously competed with Trump for the nomination, also addressed the convention, expressing their support for Trump’s bid for the White House.
Haley, reversing her previous stance, endorsed Trump, emphasizing party unity and the importance of the upcoming election.
Trump is expected to speak on Thursday, formally accepting the party’s nomination.
His speech, along with those of other prominent Republicans, will aim to solidify the party’s message and galvanize support as the election approaches.
The convention also serves as a platform for Trump to introduce his vice-presidential pick, Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio), who will speak on Wednesday evening. The event is designed to project unity and strength within the GOP, setting the stage for the upcoming election campaign.
In Milwaukee, the focus remains on showcasing a united front and rallying support for a Republican victory in 2024.
