Former President Donald Trump’s 17-year-old granddaughter, Kai Trump, took the stage at the Republican National Convention Wednesday night to share a side of her grandfather that she said most people don’t often see.
Kai Trump, the eldest daughter of Donald Trump Jr. and his ex-wife, Vanessa Trump, delivered a short but personal testament to her grandfather’s character.
“I’m speaking today to share the side of my grandpa that people don’t often see,” Kai Trump began.
“To me, he’s just a normal grandpa. He gives us candy and soda when our parents aren’t looking. He always wants to know how we’re doing in school.”
Kai Trump’s depiction of her grandfather was warm and familiar.
She shared anecdotes about how he frequently inquires about her school performance and even called her during the school day to check on her golf game.
“He calls me during the middle of the school day to ask how my golf game is going, and tells me all about his,” she said.
“But then I have to remind him that I’m in school and I’ll have to call him back later.”
The bond between Kai Trump and her grandfather extends to their shared love of golf. Kai, like her grandfather, is an avid golfer and frequently posts photos of her golf game on Instagram.
She humorously recounted how her grandfather tries to get into her head if they aren’t on the same team during a game.
“But I have to remind him, I’m a Trump, too,” she said with a smile.
Kai Trump’s speech also touched on heavier topics, including the numerous criminal cases against her grandfather.
“Even when he’s going through all these court cases, he always asks me how I’m doing,” she said.
Kai expressed her shock and concern upon hearing the news of the assassination attempt on her grandfather during his rally in Pennsylvania.
“On Saturday, I was shocked when I heard that he had been shot,” she said.
“And I just wanted to know if he was OK. It was heartbreaking that someone would do that to another person. A lot of people have put my grandpa through hell, and he’s still standing.”
Throughout Kai’s speech, former President Trump beamed with pride.
Her appearance added to a growing list of individuals, mostly women, who have shown viewers a more personal side of the former president.
“He always encourages me to push myself to be the most successful person I can be,” she said.
“Obviously, he sets the bar pretty high, but who knows, maybe one day I’ll catch him.”
Kai’s speech marked a notable moment for the next generation of Trumps.
Her father, Donald Trump Jr., introduced her, noting it was her “first time ever on a stage” and “first time ever giving a speech.”

At 17, she will not be old enough to vote this year.
An avid golfer, she recently posted a photo on Instagram standing beside her grandfather after winning a tournament at the Trump International Palm Beach golf course.
She offered words of support for her grandfather following the assassination attempt, posting a photo of a bloodied Trump raising his fist moments after the shooting with the caption, “We love you Grandpa. Never stop fighting!”
