A Presidential debate is on the cards as soon as next month as President Joe Biden has issued a challenge to former President Donald Trump for a series of debates, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election.
In a video message posted by his campaign on social media, Biden called out Trump, stating, “Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020. Since then, he hasn’t shown up for a debate. Now he’s acting like he wants to debate me again. Well, make my day, pal.”
Biden announced his readiness to participate in two televised presidential debates in June and September, organized by news organizations.
Responding to Biden’s call, Trump expressed his willingness to debate on the proposed dates.
“I am Ready and Willing to Debate Crooked Joe at the two proposed times in June and September. I would strongly recommend more than two debates,” Trump stated on his social media platform.
He added, “Just tell me when, I’ll be there. ‘Let’s get ready to Rumble!!!'”
Biden’s campaign outlined specific conditions for the debates, including the selection of debate hosts and moderators to ensure impartiality.
They emphasized the need for a serious exchange of ideas, free from distractions like raucous audiences.
The campaign also proposed a 1:1 format, excluding independent candidates.
Both the Trump and Biden campaigns expressed concerns with the organization of debates by the Commission on Presidential Debates, citing scheduling conflicts with early voting.
The Biden campaign proposed a vice-presidential debate in late July after the Republican National Convention.
CNN said that it extended an invitation for a debate on June 27, which both Biden and Trump accepted.
This early showdown is expected to set the tone for the final months of the 2024 campaign.
Informal discussions between the two campaigns revealed mutual disdain for the Commission on Presidential Debates and a desire for substantive debates.
While Biden’s campaign proposed a studio setting without a live audience for the June 27 debate, Trump expressed a preference for a large venue with an audience.
Despite these differences, both candidates appear eager for an onstage match-up.
The stage is set for a series of crucial debates between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, providing voters with an opportunity to evaluate their positions and visions for the future.
