President Joe Biden’s Final DNC Speech: Highlights Legacy, Endorses Kamala Harris for 2024

In an emotional speech on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention, President Joe Biden addressed the crowd for what may be his final appearance as president, emphasizing his dedication to democracy and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.

Biden’s speech, marked by reflections on his long career and accomplishments, was a momentous occasion, with the crowd in the Chicago arena erupting into cheers and holding up signs reading “We 💗 Joe.”

President Joe Biden, visibly moved, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve, saying, “It’s been the honor of my lifetime to serve as your president. I love the job, but I love my country more.”

A Farewell to the Presidency

President Joe Biden, who has served in public office for over five decades, including stints as senator, vice president, and now president, used the occasion to reflect on his career.

He joked about his journey from being “too young” to enter the Senate at age 29 to now being “too old” to continue as president.

In his heartfelt address, Biden acknowledged the pressures that led to his decision to step aside as the Democratic nominee after a challenging debate with former President Donald Trump.

“I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my career, but I gave my best to you,” he told the crowd, as he officially endorsed Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as the Democratic ticket for the 2024 election.

A Call to Preserve Democracy

President Joe Biden’s speech was deeply rooted in his commitment to preserving democracy, a theme that has been central to his presidency.

He reminded the audience of the events that motivated him to run for president, from the white supremacist rallies in Charlottesville in 2017 to the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.

“I believed then and I believe now that progress was and is possible,” Biden said. “Justice is achievable. And our best days are not behind us — they’re before us.”

Biden also emphasized the importance of unity, urging Americans to come together as they did in 2020 to “save democracy.” He reiterated his belief that democracy has prevailed and that it must continue to be protected in the upcoming election.

Celebrating Achievements

President Joe Biden took the opportunity to highlight the accomplishments of his administration, citing the creation of 60 million new jobs, a record-high stock market, and progress in reducing inflation.

He also pointed to successes in addressing racial inequality, narrowing the wealth gap, and expanding health insurance coverage to more Americans than ever before.

Biden’s administration also saw a reduction in violent crime, which had spiked during the pandemic.

President Joe Biden credited this progress to his policies and expressed confidence that it would continue under Harris, who he praised for her background as a prosecutor.

“Crime will keep coming down when we put a prosecutor in the Oval Office instead of a convicted felon,” Biden said, referring to Harris’ legal career.

A Vision for the Future

President Joe Biden’s speech also touched on foreign policy, addressing ongoing efforts to secure a cease-fire in the Middle East and provide aid to Palestinians in Gaza.

Acknowledging the protesters outside the convention who criticized his handling of the conflict, Biden said, “Those protesters out in the street, they have a point. A lot of innocent people are being killed on both sides.”

President Joe Biden ended his address with a hopeful message for the future, urging Democrats to unite behind Harris and Walz and continue the fight for a nation of possibilities. He pledged to support their campaign as the “best volunteer” they would ever have.
