The FBI is currently investigating whether New York Mayor Eric Adams received alleged free upgrades on Turkish Airlines, the national carrier of Turkey.
Scrutiny of these flights is part of a broader corruption inquiry involving a top Turkish Airlines executive, aides to the mayor, and Adams himself.
At the heart of the investigation are claims that Mayor Eric Adams may have received valuable flight upgrades from Turkish Airlines, possibly elevating him to its highest class of seats available on international trips.
This probe forms a critical aspect of a larger corruption inquiry, which has already prompted searches of residences belonging to former top New York-based executives of Turkish Airlines, as well as aides closely associated with Mayor Adams.
Mayor Eric Adams’s relationship with Turkish Airlines extends beyond mere patronage.
Adams has flown on Turkish Airlines since at least August 2015, when as Brooklyn borough president he took an official trip to Turkey and the carrier funded travel that his aides valued at about $1,500.
He has participated in meetings and events alongside representatives of the airline, which maintains significant ties to the Turkish government’s sovereign wealth fund.
Federal authorities have uncovered evidence suggesting that a former Turkish Airlines executive may have facilitated some of the upgrades in collaboration with individuals linked to Mayor Adams’s administration.
Adams won the Democratic mayoral primary in June 2021. Soon after, he contacted the commissioner of the New York Fire Department at the time and urged him to allow the opening of the Turkish consulate building, which had been held up over fire safety concerns.
The building received a temporary certificate of occupancy that September — shortly before Turkish President Recep Erdogan presided over the consulate’s grand opening in Manhattan, The New York Times reported.
While Mayor Eric Adams has staunchly refuted any allegations of impropriety, the investigation has cast a shadow over his administration.
His legal counsel has asserted that there were no inappropriate exchanges involved in the receipt of the upgrades or in the mayor’s relationship with Turkish Airlines.
“As Borough President, the Mayor consistently disclosed his official travel to Turkey, did not receive any improper upgrades and did nothing inappropriate in exchange for an upgrade. Speculation is not evidence. We look forward to a just and timely conclusion to this investigation,” Adams’ attorney, Brendan McGuire, said in a statement.
Nevertheless, the inquiry has sparked concerns within the city’s political landscape, with questions arising about the potential ethical ramifications and legal consequences.
Despite the public attention on the investigation, it remains unclear whether criminal charges will be brought against Adams or any other individuals involved.
The FBI and federal prosecutors have made few public moves since the initial searches in November, leaving the outcome of the inquiry uncertain.
