In a significant development in the criminal hush money case involving former President Donald Trump, New York Judge Juan Merchan has granted the Manhattan district attorney’s request for a limited gag order.
This decision restricts Trump’s ability to make public statements about various individuals connected to the case.
Judge Merchan’s decision to impose the partial gag order came on Tuesday, citing concerns over the nature of Trump’s public statements.
According to the judge, Trump’s remarks about witnesses, prosecutors, judges, and others involved in his criminal and civil cases were deemed as “threatening, inflammatory, denigrating,” posing a risk to the administration of justice.
Judge Merchan highlighted that such statements not only induced fear among the targeted individuals but also necessitated increased security measures to investigate threats and ensure the safety of those affected.
The imposed gag order prevents Trump from making public statements about witnesses in the hush money case, potential jurors, members of the court staff and their families, and attorneys other than Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
Trump, who pleaded not guilty last April to a 34-count indictment, faces charges related to falsifying business records concerning a hush money payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels by his then-attorney Michael Cohen, just days before the 2016 presidential election.
Despite the allegations, the former president has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
Following the issuance of the partial gag order, Michael Cohen released a statement expressing gratitude to Judge Merchan.
Cohen, who has been subject to what he described as relentless attacks from Trump’s supporters, welcomed the imposition of the gag order.
In a separate development, Trump’s legal team sought to delay the trial once again, citing concerns over “exceptionally prejudicial pretrial publicity.”
They argued that potential jurors in Manhattan had been exposed to biased media coverage, particularly referencing a new documentary featuring Stormy Daniels.
Trump’s defense team, led by attorney Todd Blanche, emphasized the importance of ensuring a fair trial for the former president.
They contended that the trial should not commence until the prejudicial press coverage subsides, asserting Trump’s constitutional right to a fair trial.
Upcoming Trial Proceedings
Despite the attempts to delay proceedings, jury selection for the trial is scheduled to commence on 15 April in New York City.
The case has garnered significant attention, reflecting the intersection of legal, political, and media dynamics surrounding Trump’s tenure as president.
