MSNBC Faces Backlash for Comparing Trump Rally to Nazi Event with 1939 Madison Square Garden Footage

MSNBC has come under intense criticism for using footage from a 1939 Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden to accompany its coverage of former President Donald Trump’s recent rally at the same venue.

The controversial choice by the network, which aired images from a Nazi event that historically supported Adolf Hitler, has sparked outrage among Trump supporters and various public figures, who view the comparison as misleading and incendiary.

MSNBC Draws Parallels Between Trump and Nazi Rally

During its coverage of Trump’s packed event at Madison Square Garden, an MSNBC anchor introduced the Nazi rally footage by emphasizing the chilling history of the arena.

“But that jamboree happening right now, you see it there on your screen in that place is particularly chilling because in 1939, more than 20,000 supporters of a different fascist leader, Adolf Hitler, packed the Garden for a so-called pro-America rally,” the anchor noted.

The footage aired alongside Trump’s rally, creating what many viewers felt was an unjust comparison.

Critics argue the MSNBC coverage was an attempt to draw a direct link between Trump’s supporters and fascist ideologies.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who attended Trump’s rally, was vocal in his condemnation for the network’s Nazi rally comparison, referring to MSNBC as “the scum of the Earth” on the social media platform X, where he has over 200 million followers.

Musk’s criticism echoes the sentiment of many Trump supporters who see the footage as not just mis-representative but inflammatory.

Holocaust Survivor and Trump Supporters Respond

The backlash was amplified by attendees, including Holocaust survivor Jerry Wartski, who was present at the rally.

Wartski, 94, who recently endorsed Trump, dismissed MSNBC’s portrayal, emphasizing the diversity within Trump’s supporters.

When asked about his support, Wartski, an Auschwitz survivor, explained that he views Trump as “a mensch,” using the Yiddish term for a person of integrity and honor.

Wartski’s presence at the rally, along with other Jewish attendees, was highlighted by Republican commentator Colin Rugg, who posted on X, “Holocaust survivor Jerry Wartski was in attendance at the rally this evening, along with other Jews who were supporting Trump.”

Prominent social media users also defended the rally, highlighting the diversity among Trump’s supporters.

“Yesterday’s Trump rally was filled with Americans from every walk of life, including orthodox, conservative, reform, and secular Jews,” wrote user @amuse, calling MSNBC’s coverage of it and comparison with Nazi rally “shameful.”

Propaganda Accusations and Media Ethics Debate

The media storm has fueled accusations of incitement and propaganda, with users on social media questioning the ethics of MSNBC’s coverage.

Political analyst Sam Mitha posted, “Trump had a Revolutionary Rally in New York City’s Madison Square Garden. The energy was unmatched and a promise of a better America was on the horizon. Liberal media couldn’t handle this, so they ran a propaganda campaign simultaneously, comparing this Trump rally to a NAZI rally in 1939.”

This incident has reopened discussions about the role of media in shaping political narratives.

Democrats, including Vice President Kamala Harris, have previously positioned themselves as the party of unity and positivity, a sentiment Harris championed in her Democratic National Convention speech, where she called for “a new way forward.”

Critics argue that MSNBC’s recent portrayal of Trump’s rally contradicts this message, instead fostering division.

The comparison has led to broader questions about media responsibility, with conservative commentators claiming that mainstream networks, including MSNBC, are misusing their platforms to create a hostile and polarized environment.

As the discussion continues, MSNBC has yet to release an official response to the backlash, though the controversy has already ignited renewed scrutiny over the network’s approach to political coverage.
