In a shocking turn of events, a burning car in California reportedly pushed into a gully less than a week ago has ignited one of the most devastating wildfires in the recent history of state.
As of Sunday, officials reported that the Park Fire has ravaged over 360,000 acres, making it the largest wildfire since 2020 and the seventh-largest in the California’s history.
The latest update from CalFire on Sunday night revealed the Park Fire had expanded to 360,141 acres with only 12% containment.
This vast area—approximately 563 square miles— in California is comparable to half the size of Rhode Island and significantly larger than both San Francisco County and the city of Los Angeles.
Nestled between the LNU Lightning Complex Fire of 2020 and the North Complex Fire of the same year, the Park Fire has etched its place in history, following the August Complex Fire of 2020, which remains the largest in at over 1 million acres.
The blaze has wreaked havoc across four counties—Butte, Plumas, Shasta, and Tehama—destroying at least 100 structures and threatening over 4,000 more.
Thankfully, there have been no reported injuries or fatalities among civilians or firefighters.
Cooler temperatures on Sunday provided some respite, allowing responders to make headway against the fire’s rapid spread.
However, less smoke led to a warmer climate around the fire, spurring increased activity.
Beyond the destruction of structures, the Park Fire has spawned fire tornadoes and infiltrated Lassen Volcanic National Park, now closed due to the danger.
The park’s western edge is under threat, echoing the destruction wrought by the Dixie Fire three years prior.
Efforts are underway to preserve historical artifacts housed in the 1927 Loomis Museum, underscoring the cultural loss inflicted by the wildfire.
Christopher Apel and his brother-in-law Bruce Hey, long-time residents of the Cohasset area, are among those deeply affected.
Their adjacent properties, home to survivors of the 2018 Camp Fire, are now engulfed in flames.
Hey recounted a harrowing escape, sustaining burns while trying to flee the advancing fire.
Julie Yarbough, a former news anchor, witnessed her home succumb to the flames in real-time via home security footage.
She described the experience as surreal, noting a sense of numbness in the immediate aftermath of such significant loss.
Authorities have linked the California Park Fire’s origin to an act of arson. Ronnie Dean Stout II, a 42-year-old resident of Chico, was arrested and charged with felony arson. He remains in custody without bail.
Allegedly, Stout pushed a burning car into a gully on Wednesday, sparking the catastrophic blaze.
California Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized the state’s full commitment to battling the fire, highlighting the deployment of aerial resources and over 2,500 personnel working tirelessly to contain the blaze.
The Park Fire is part of a broader wildfire crisis in California, where multiple fires have consumed over half a million acres as of last weekend.
The Gold Complex Fire, which started a week ago, has burned 3,007 acres and was 75% contained by Monday morning.
In California’s Sequoia National Forest, the Borel Fire, ignited on Wednesday, has already scorched nearly 32,000 acres with 0% containment. Nearby, the Trout Fire, which began on July 13, has burned over 22,000 acres and is 25% contained.
Elevated fire risk persists across the West, with Red Flag warnings in effect for parts of California, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado.
Smoke and haze from the wildfires are forecasted to spread east into the Plains and Midwest, prompting air quality alerts for regions in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Colorado.
The ongoing wildfire crisis highlights the urgent need for effective firefighting strategies and heightened awareness of fire safety to prevent future tragedies of this magnitude in California.
