Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban caused a stir on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, by posting a poll on Friday night.
The billionaire entrepreneur and “Shark Tank” star posed a thought-provoking question to his followers:
“Who’s persona and character would you like to see young children grow up to have?”
The two options were former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The result? Trump won by a significant margin, securing 68.9% of the vote compared to Harris’s 31.1%.
The poll, which garnered 804,173 votes by the time it closed, quickly became a hot topic on the platform.
Cuban’s poll prompted reactions from across the political spectrum. Among the most vocal critics of Harris was Valentina Gomez, a former Republican candidate for Missouri Secretary of State. Gomez, who lost her race earlier this month, joined other right-wing voices in questioning Harris’s professional history, highlighting her controversial decisions as a prosecutor and her tenure as California’s attorney general.
Despite the divided opinions, one thing is clear: the entrepreneur’s poll touched a nerve, and it became a battleground for political commentary.
What makes Cuban’s poll even more intriguing is his own complicated history with Trump.
Though he has been a vocal opponent of the former president for years, the billionaire once expressed support for Trump during his initial presidential campaign in 2015.
In a recent interview with businessman and 2024 Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, Cuban explained his initial backing of Trump.
“In 2015, I was like, ‘He’s great. He’s not a typical Stepford candidate. I thought that was a positive,” Cuban said, adding that he didn’t think Trump had a real chance of winning and saw his candidacy as a way to shake up traditional politics.
At the time, Cuban even entertained the idea of becoming Trump’s running mate.
In a July 2015 interview with Business Insider, he said, “I don’t care what his actual positions are… He says what’s on his mind. He gives honest answers rather than prepared answers. This is more important than anything any candidate has done in years.”
However, Cuban’s views on Trump have since shifted dramatically.
Earlier this year, he made headlines for saying he would vote for President Joe Biden over Trump, even if Biden were “being given his last rites.”
In a March interview with Bloomberg News, Cuban stated, “If they were having his last wake, and it was him versus Trump, and he was being given last rites, I would still vote for Joe Biden.”
Cuban has also thrown his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris.
On August 16, he defended her economic agenda in a series of posts on X, showing his alignment with her policies.
Cuban even accused Trump of copying Harris’s policy positions, writing on August 24, “And now he is copying @KamalaHQ policies. What’s going on here?”
Mark Cuban’s poll may have been just one question, but it has sparked a larger conversation about leadership, character, and the political choices facing the country.
