Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has issued a call to her Republican colleagues, urging them to release all ethics reports and allegations, including her own claims and high-profile controversies surrounding figures like Jeffrey Epstein.
This comes as some House and Senate Republicans are calling for disclosure of the report on Gaetz. Greene’s call is being construed as a warning to all those establishment Republicans.
In a striking statement, Greene declared, “If we’re going to dance, let’s all dance in the sunlight. I’ll make sure we do.”
Greene’s warning comes amid a pivotal meeting by the House Ethics Committee, which is set to decide whether to publicly release a report on former Rep. Matt Gaetz.
The findings stem from a three-year investigation into accusations of sexual misconduct, drug use, improper gifts, and obstruction.
The bipartisan Ethics Committee, led by Chairman Michael Guest (R-Miss.) and Rep. Susan Wild (D-Pa.), is deliberating behind closed doors about releasing the Gaetz report.
Gaetz resigned last week to accept President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination as attorney general, raising questions about the Ethics Committee’s jurisdiction over former members.
House Speaker Mike Johnson argued against the committee’s involvement, stating, “Matt Gaetz is not a member of the body anymore.”
However, Wild countered, citing historical precedents for releasing ethics reports post-resignation, such as cases involving Rep. Bill Boner in 1987 and Rep. Buz Lukens in 1990.
Wild said, “The House report should absolutely be released to the public,” adding that forwarding it to the Senate would at least provide transparency as Gaetz faces confirmation hearings.
The Ethics Committee’s investigation included testimony from two women alleging that Gaetz paid them for sex during a party in Florida.
One woman claimed to have witnessed Gaetz engaging in sexual activity with a 17-year-old, though she believed Gaetz was unaware of her age.
Attorney Joel Leppard, representing the women, emphasized the importance of publicizing the findings. “They want the American people to know the truth and that they are speaking the truth,” Leppard said.
Gaetz and Trump’s transition team have dismissed the allegations as “baseless,” noting that the Justice Department closed its investigation without filing charges.
Despite skepticism from Senate Republicans regarding Gaetz’s nomination, Trump continues to rally support.
Vice President-elect JD Vance is meeting with key senators to advocate for Trump’s Cabinet picks, including Gaetz for attorney general.
The Ethics Committee’s options include releasing the report, forwarding it to the Senate, or taking no action.
If the committee opts for silence, any House member could force a vote on the House floor to disclose the findings, as occurred in the 1996 ethics case involving then-Speaker Newt Gingrich. However, the bid failed as House rejected it.
Greene’s call for transparency places additional pressure on her party and the Ethics Committee.
