Michael Cohen, former personal attorney to Donald Trump, resumed his testimony on Tuesday in Trump’s New York trial, continuing his account of events that occurred during his time working for the former president.
During his testimony, Michael Cohen revealed that he continued to lie for Trump out of loyalty and to protect him.
He held the title of Trump’s personal counsel for approximately 15 months, during which he felt a tremendous amount of pressure, especially when subpoenaed to testify before the House and Senate Intelligence Committees during the Russia investigations in 2017.
Cohen emphasized the importance of Trump’s legal support at the time, as his attorney was being paid by the Trump Organization.
Cohen admitted to making false statements to Congress regarding the Trump Tower Moscow real estate project, acknowledging that he lied about the frequency and timing of conversations with Trump regarding the project.
When asked why he lied, Michael Cohen explained that he did so to stay on Trump’s message that there was no Russian collusion, in coordination with the joint defense team.
Cohen confirmed that in 2018, he continued to pressure individuals, such as attorney Keith Davidson, to lie about deals involving Karen McDougal and Stormy Daniels, all in an effort to protect Trump.
Prosecutors questioned Cohen about the $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels and Trump’s involvement in reimbursing him for it.
Cohen admitted that he did not tell the truth about his involvement in the payoff at the time, nor did he disclose Trump’s repayment.
He recalled informing Trump about the false statement he was giving to the media, stating that he did it to protect Trump, even though he knew it was false.
Cohen confirmed his participation in a joint defense agreement with Trump, acknowledging that both he and Trump benefited from it. However, when asked who else benefited, the defense objected.
Regarding Stormy Daniels’ denial statement, Cohen admitted to crafting it himself and knew it was false.
He explained that he did it to ensure Trump’s protection and loyalty, and to put an end to persistent media inquiries about the alleged encounter.
As Michael Cohen continues his testimony against Donald Trump, his accounts shed light on the inner workings of Trump’s circle and the extent to which Cohen was willing to go to protect his former boss.
The trial continues to unfold as Cohen’s testimony provides crucial insights into the events surrounding Trump’s presidency. However, the only issue with his testimony is Cohen’s credibility.
