Fox News will feature a significant political moment this week as Vice President Kamala Harris steps out of her usual comfort zone for a sit-down interview with Bret Baier.
This interview, set to air Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET, marks Harris’ first appearance on the conservative network since becoming the Democratic nominee, just three weeks before Election Day.
The Pennsylvania-based interview comes at a pivotal time in the vice president’s campaign.
While Harris has embraced interviews with more liberal-leaning, Democrats friendly outlets like ABC’s The View and MSNBC, her choice to engage with Fox News signals a strategic shift in her media approach.
Up to now, her campaign has largely avoided tough interviews, leaning on friendly media environments to communicate her message.
Fox News’ Bret Baier, known for his balanced but pointed questions, presents a new challenge for Harris.
Baier’s ability to scrutinize both sides of the political spectrum offers a different type of forum for the vice president, who has primarily been connecting with voters through rallies, small stops, and television ads.
Harris’ choice to engage with Fox News is a calculated risk, given the channel’s conservative viewership and its typical stance on Democratic policies.
Senior campaign adviser Ian Sams acknowledged this challenge, stating that Harris is “looking forward to talking and answering tough questions.”
Some Democratic strategists see this as an opportunity for Harris to address criticisms and reshape how she is perceived by more conservative viewers.
Larry Ceisler, a Democratic public affairs executive in Pennsylvania, emphasized the significance of this appearance.
He pointed to Harris’ recent misstep on The View, where she couldn’t immediately articulate any policy differences between herself and President Joe Biden, as an example of what she needs to avoid in such high-stakes interviews.
“You can’t be in lockstep on everything,” Ceisler commented. “This is her chance to address those concerns and show some independence.”
Harris’ campaign has faced criticism for its lack of mainstream media engagement.
By choosing Fox News, her team hopes to turn that narrative around while simultaneously drawing attention to former President Donald Trump’s relative avoidance of challenging media outlets.
“This is a stark reminder that we’re not seeing Donald Trump do very many interviews,” Sams said, hinting that Harris’ move could be a subtle jab at Trump’s more curated media appearances.
Trump has generally favored friendly media environments, from long-form podcasts to interviews with hosts sympathetic to his policies.
His appearances on shows popular with young male voters, a demographic where he is gaining traction, have allowed him to maintain control of the narrative.
On the other hand, Trump rarely subjects himself to the kind of grilling Harris will face on Fox News.
Democrats are eyeing Harris’ Fox News interview as a moment to reach an audience typically critical of her and the Biden administration.
According to Ceisler, the vice president’s appearance on Fox News could shift perceptions, especially among voters less familiar with her policies.
“She needs to go on there because she needs to show these Fox viewers that she’s not the devil incarnate,” Ceisler remarked.
While it’s unclear how Harris will fare in this unfamiliar territory, the decision to engage with Fox News reflects the high stakes of the 2024 election.
With only weeks remaining, every media appearance counts in shaping public opinion.
Harris’ performance could either reinforce or reshape how she is viewed by conservative voters, and her responses will likely reverberate through the final stretch of the campaign.
Both Harris and Trump are now facing critical moments in their media strategies as Election Day draws closer, with each candidate needing to persuade undecided voters and shore up support from their respective bases.
