A federal lawsuit filed Sunday accuses Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, and Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl at an after-party following the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.
The accuser, identified only as “Jane Doe,” claims the incident took place at a private residence in New York.
The lawsuit, initially filed in October against Combs, was amended to include Carter.
Attorney Tony Buzbee, representing the accuser, declined to comment on the case.
Jay-Z dismissed the claims in a statement Sunday, labeling them as “idiotic” and criticizing Buzbee’s approach as unprofessional.
He also challenged the accuser to file a criminal complaint rather than pursuing a civil case.
“These allegations are so heinous in nature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one,” Carter stated.
“Whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away.”
Carter’s statement also highlighted the personal toll of the lawsuit, referencing his concerns about its impact on his family.
The lawsuit describes an unsettling sequence of events.
The accuser alleges she was invited to the party by a limousine driver claiming to work for Combs.
At the venue, the accuser signed a nondisclosure agreement and consumed a drink that made her feel incapacitated.
Shortly afterward, the suit says, Combs and Jay-Z entered the room with Combs saying, “You are ready to party!”
That’s when, she alleges, Carter removed her clothes, held her down and raped her while Combs and an unnamed female celebrity watched. She says Combs also raped her as Carter and the woman looked on.
The suit says that she was able to resist being forced to perform oral sex on Combs by hitting him in the neck and that he “stopped.”
After the alleged assault, the suit says, she “grabbed her clothes” and left. She made her way to a gas station, where she called her father, it says.
Afterward, she reportedly fled the scene, contacting her father from a gas station.
The lawsuit, filed under New York’s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Act, seeks unspecified damages.
This lawsuit adds to Combs’ ongoing legal issues. He is currently detained in Brooklyn on charges of racketeering and sex trafficking.
His trial is scheduled for May 2024, and prosecutors have hinted at additional charges.
Combs’ representatives have categorically denied all allegations, describing them as “shameless publicity stunts” targeting high-profile individuals.
Jay-Z has filed a countersuit against the accuser’s attorneys, further escalating the legal confrontation.
In his statement, he criticized what he described as a “network of conspiracy theorists” and reaffirmed his innocence.
Both Carter and Combs have expressed confidence in their respective legal teams, with Carter insisting that the truth will exonerate him.
This case marks a significant development in the entertainment industry, where allegations of sexual misconduct continue to emerge.
The outcomes of these lawsuits will likely reverberate across Hollywood and beyond, as the judicial process unfolds.
“My only heartbreak is for my family,” Jay-Z said in the statement.
“My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people. I mourn yet another loss of innocence.
“Only your network of conspiracy theorists, fake physics, will believe the idiotic claims you have levied against me that, if not for the seriousness surrounding harm to kids, would be laughable,” Jay-Z added.
