Hallie Biden, widow of Beau Biden and key witness in Hunter Biden’s federal gun trial, testified on Thursday.
Hallie recounted her discovery and subsequent disposal of the firearm at the center of the case.
She admitted to panicking when she found the gun in Hunter’s car, which she often searched for drugs and alcohol.
“I wanted to get rid of them,” Hallie said, explaining her fear that President Biden’s son might harm himself or that her children might find the weapon.
Prosecutors presented surveillance footage showing Hallie driving into a grocery store parking lot, discarding the gun in a dumpster, and later returning to search for it.
Hallie explained, “I didn’t want him to hurt himself or the kids to find it and hurt themselves.”
During her testimony, Hallie also discussed Biden’s drug use, revealing that he introduced her to crack cocaine.
“It was a terrible experience that I went through and I’m embarrassed and ashamed,” she said.
Hallie described the President’s son as “agitated” and “high-strung” while using drugs, although he could function at times.
Biden faces three felony charges related to his purchase of a revolver in October 2018.
The charges include making false statements on a federal gun form about his drug use and unlawful possession of the gun.
The President’s son has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The trial featured testimony from Gordon Cleveland, who sold the gun to Hunter Biden.
Cleveland testified that Biden did not appear confused when filling out the federal form required for the purchase.
In contrast, Hunter’s attorney Abbe Lowell argued that many addicts are in “denial” about their drug use, suggesting that he did not intend to lie.
Prosecutor Derek Hines emphasized that while addiction may not be a choice, lying on a federal form and purchasing a gun is.
Lowell also questioned the authenticity of personal text messages from Biden’s devices, with FBI special agent Erika Jensen admitting she could not verify their contents had not been tampered with.
Hunter Biden’s ex-wife, Kathleen Buhle, and former girlfriend, Zoe Kestan, testified about his drug use.
Buhle confronted junior Biden after finding a “crack pipe” and although she never saw him use drugs, he admitted his drug use to her.
Their testimonies highlighted Hunter’s struggle with addiction, a central theme in the trial.
Text messages between Hallie and Hunter from October 2018 were presented as evidence. In one exchange, Hunter admitted to sleeping in a car and smoking crack. Hallie testified that she feared Hunter might overdose or commit suicide.
On October 23, 2018, Hallie Biden discovered the gun in Hunter’s car. She placed the firearm, bullets, and what she believed to be drug remnants into a bag and discarded them in a trash can outside Janssen’s Market.
Surveillance footage corroborated her account, showing Hallie disposing of the gun and later searching for it upon Hunter’s request.
Hallie explained her decision to throw away the gun: “I realize it was a stupid idea now, but I was panicking.”
She followed Hunter’s instructions to search for the gun and, when it was not found, filed a police report.
In addition to the gun charges, Biden faces nine federal tax charges in California. Federal prosecutors allege that he engaged in a “four-year scheme” to avoid paying at least $1.4 million in federal taxes.
These tax charges are not admissible in his gun trial in Delaware, where he has pleaded not guilty.
