The progressive group of House Democrats known as the “Squad” is confronting a series of high-stakes primaries as they face intraparty challenges.

This comes after a summer of electoral turbulence, with Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota up next in what could be a defining moment for the group.

Omar’s Challenge in Minnesota

Rep. Ilhan Omar, a key member of the Squad and a trailblazer as the first Somali American in Congress, is seeking re-election for a fourth term in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.

Omar’s candidacy comes just a week after Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri, another Squad member, lost her bid for re-nomination, and nearly two months after Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York faced a similar fate.

Omar, however, appears to be in a stronger position compared to her colleagues.

Despite her outspoken criticism of Israel, she has not been the target of ads from the United Democracy Project, a super PAC affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee that heavily funded campaigns against Bush and Bowman.

Omar’s primary challenge comes primarily from Don Samuels, whom she narrowly defeated two years ago.

Samuels has reported a surge in both fundraising and volunteer support following Bush’s defeat, framing Omar as a “divisive and combative” figure who alienates segments of her constituency.

The Impact of High-Profile Endorsements

The Minnesota primary is occurring in a charged political environment, with Vice President Kamala Harris recently naming Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for the 2024 Democratic ticket.

An old clip of Walz praising Omar has resurfaced, adding another layer of complexity to the race.

Meanwhile, another prominent Squad member, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, easily secured her primary win in June, showcasing the varied fortunes within the group.

Nationwide Implications for the Squad

The upcoming primaries also spotlight the remaining members of the Squad.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts is set to face her primary challenge in September, though she currently remains unopposed.

Beyond the Squad, other significant primaries are taking place across the Midwest and New England. In Minnesota, Sen. Amy Klobuchar is heavily favored to win her Democratic Senate primary as she seeks a fourth term.

In Wisconsin, Sen. Tammy Baldwin faces no primary opposition as she campaigns for a third term, while Republican businessman Eric Hovde, backed by former President Trump, is leading in the GOP Senate primary.

In Connecticut, Republicans are gearing up to challenge long-standing Democratic incumbents Sen. Chris Murphy and Rep. Jim Himes, while Vermont’s gubernatorial race sees two Democrats vying to challenge popular Republican Gov. Phil Scott.
