Hunter Biden’s defense team called his daughter, Naomi Biden, to testify in his trial concerning his October 2018 firearm purchase.
Naomi Biden, who is also a lawyer, provided detailed accounts of her interactions with her father during August and October 2018, focusing on his behavior and the circumstances surrounding the firearm.
A significant part of Naomi Biden’s testimony centered on a trip Hunter Biden took to New York to exchange cars with her.
During this period, she had borrowed his truck, which was eventually found to contain the firearm in question.
Naomi described meeting her father in mid-October 2018 in New York, where they swapped Hunter Biden’s truck for a Cadillac belonging to her grandfather, Joe Biden.
She mentioned that the truck was in “good condition” and devoid of any drug paraphernalia.
Naomi Biden also recounted a visit in August 2018 when she and her now-husband, Peter Neal, met Hunter Biden in Los Angeles while he was in rehab. She testified that her father seemed clear-minded and was doing well in his recovery at that time.
However, under cross-examination, Naomi acknowledged that she was aware of her father’s struggle with addiction but noted he never used illegal drugs in front of her.
Prosecutors scrutinized text messages between Naomi Biden and her father from October 2018 to establish Hunter Biden’s state of mind and potential ongoing drug use during the period he possessed the firearm.
Naomi confirmed receiving late-night messages from her father and mentioned the difficulty in coordinating their meetings due to her busy schedule.
When asked about Hunter Biden’s alleged meeting with a drug dealer, she repeatedly denied any knowledge of such events.
James “Jimmy” Biden, President Biden’s brother, was scheduled to testify but the court adjourned earlier than expected.
His testimony might be crucial if Hunter Biden decides to take the stand.
Hallie Biden, who was romantically involved with Hunter Biden at the time, testified that she found the gun in Hunter’s truck and discarded it out of concern for their children’s safety.
Surveillance footage corroborated her account of disposing of the firearm in a grocery store dumpster and later returning to retrieve it.
The prosecution presented testimonies from an FBI chemist and a DEA agent. Dr. Jason Brewer identified a minimal amount of cocaine residue on a leather pouch associated with the firearm.
DEA agent Joshua Romig explained the slang used in Hunter Biden’s text messages, linking terms like “baby powder” and “soft stuff” to cocaine.
Before Naomi Biden’s testimony, the defense called Jason Turner, a former employee of the gun store where Hunter Biden purchased the firearm, and Ron Palmieri, the store owner.
Turner discussed the background check process and acknowledged adding supplemental ID information for Hunter Biden.
Palmieri confirmed approving the ID used for the purchase and stated he did not personally interact with Hunter Biden during the transaction.
Hunter Biden faces three felony charges related to his 2018 firearm purchase.
Two charges stem from allegedly false statements on a federal gun form about his drug use, while the third charge involves unlawfully possessing the firearm for 11 days before Hallie Biden disposed of it.
Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty, with his defense arguing that he did not consider himself an addict at the time of the purchase and was in denial about his drug use.
Prosecutors highlighted text exchanges and other evidence suggesting Hunter Biden’s ongoing drug use during the period he owned the firearm.
They presented messages between Hunter and Hallie Biden discussing his drug use and behavior.
Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, has focused on questioning the reliability of the evidence, particularly the timing of forensic analyses and the context of the text messages.
The defense aims to establish that Hunter Biden did not knowingly falsify information on the gun form due to his state of mind at the time.
The trial continues with anticipation over whether Hunter Biden will testify in his own defense, potentially bringing more family members to the witness stand.
