Georgia Shooting: Tragedy struck at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, as a 14-year-old student opened fire, leaving four dead and nine injured.
This horrific incident marks the 45th school shooting in the U.S. this year, the deadliest since the March 2023 Covenant School massacre in Nashville.
The suspect, Colt Gray, allegedly carried out the shooting at the Georgia school with an AR-platform weapon, targeting two students and two teachers.
The gunman, identified as a freshman, reportedly left his Algebra class around 9:45 a.m. and attempted to re-enter, only to be turned away by a classmate who noticed the gun. This diversion likely saved lives, according to witnesses.
Lyela Sayarath, a fellow student, described the terrifying moments: “I think he wanted to come to us first…and you hear about 10 to 15 rounds back-to-back.”
The first report of an active shooter came in at 10:20 a.m. School resource officers and law enforcement arrived promptly, with one officer confronting the shooter, leading to Gray’s surrender, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith stated.
Authorities are investigating whether the shooter specifically targeted his victims.
The victims included two 14-year-old students, Christian Angulo and Mason Schermerhorn, as well as 53-year-old math teacher Christina Irimie and 39-year-old math teacher and assistant football coach Richard Aspinwall.
The school staff’s swift actions played a critical role in minimizing casualties. A recently implemented safety measure involving ID badges, known as Centegix, enabled staff to alert law enforcement in real-time, significantly reducing the response time.
“Without these protocols, this could have been much worse,” said Georgia Bureau of Investigations Director Chris Hosey. The Centegix system, adopted just a week earlier, includes panic buttons for staff and real-time location tracking.
Gray was taken into custody and is expected to be tried as an adult. While investigators confirmed the weapon used was an AR-15-style rifle, it remains unclear how the suspect obtained the firearm or smuggled it into the school.
Authorities have interviewed the suspect’s family and are reviewing online threats linked to Gray.
Gray was previously questioned last year over anonymous tips about threats to commit a school shooting.
However, at the time, authorities found no probable cause for arrest.
Apalachee High School will remain closed for the rest of the week as the Barrow County community grapples with the tragedy.
Students and parents are expressing fear about returning to school.
“I want to go to school worrying about my GPA, not about dying,” said 14-year-old student Macey Right, voicing a sentiment shared by many in the wake of the shooting.
