Freight Train Derailment on Portland’s Steel Bridge Causes Major Traffic Disruptions

In a significant disruption early Monday morning, a Union Pacific freight train derailed on the lower deck of the Steel Bridge in Portland, leading to widespread transit and traffic delays.

The incident occurred just after 6 a.m. at the east end of the bridge, which is a critical passageway for both rail and road traffic.

Immediate Impact on Portland’s Transportation

Following the derailment, the Portland Police Bureau announced that the top deck of the Steel Bridge would be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic for several hours as authorities assess the situation.

This has resulted in substantial transit disruptions, particularly for the city’s MAX Blue, Red, Green, and Yellow lines.

TriMet, the local transit authority, has initiated shuttle buses to serve these lines in the interim.

Additionally, a nearby section of the Eastbank Esplanade has also been closed, further limiting pedestrian movements near the area.

Details of the Derailment

Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) reported that six railcars were involved in the derailment, with two empty lumber cars completely coming off the tracks, and four other cars partially derailed.

Notably, one of the derailed cars is now leaning against a structural support column of the bridge, prompting immediate structural integrity assessments.

In response to potential hazardous material concerns, PF&R has deployed a hazmat team to the site.

Their initial investigations have not indicated any leakage from the derailed cars. PF&R and other emergency responders are currently coordinating closely with Union Pacific to manage the incident and develop a mitigation plan.

No Injuries Reported, Hazmat Precautions in Place

Authorities have confirmed that there have been no injuries as a result of the derailment.

The hazmat team continues to survey the scene to ensure there are no environmental or public health threats.

This precaution is standard procedure in rail incidents involving potential hazardous materials.

Ongoing Response and Expected Delays

As the day progresses, officials expect that the disruption will be an extended issue, with both rail and road closures affecting the daily commute for thousands of Portland residents and visitors.

The focus remains on safely resolving the incident without compromising the structural integrity of the historic Steel Bridge.

Portland Fire & Rescue has emphasized the complexity of the situation, stating that the response will be protracted and coordinated with Union Pacific.

Commuters have been advised to seek alternate routes and stay informed through updates from TriMet and local news outlets.
