Billionaire Elon Musk has firmly denied recent reports claiming he is donating $45 million per month to a super PAC supporting former President Donald Trump in the lead-up to the November election.
“What’s been reported in the media is simply not true,” Musk stated in an interview with conservative commentator Jordan Peterson. “
I am not donating $45 million a month to Trump.”
The denial follows a report by The Wall Street Journal, which alleged that Elon Musk was planning to donate $45 million monthly to America PAC.
This organization focuses on voter registration and encouraging swing state residents to vote early and request mail-in ballots, countering Democratic get-out-the-vote campaigns and grassroots efforts.
At a campaign rally on Saturday, Trump referenced the report, claiming he had read that Elon Musk was donating $45 million monthly to his campaign efforts.
“He didn’t even tell me about it,” Trump remarked, hinting at the reported generosity of the Tesla and SpaceX CEO.
On Tuesday, Elon Musk clarified his stance, confirming that he does plan to make donations to America PAC, albeit at a much lower level than reported.
“I am making some donations to America PAC, but at a much lower level and the key values of the PAC are supporting a meritocracy & individual freedom,” he wrote on the social media platform X.
“Republicans are mostly, but not entirely, on the side of merit & freedom.”
Elon Musk explained that he helped create America PAC, which is designed to support Trump but not in a hyperpartisan manner.
“It’s actually the core principles this America PAC are, the intent is to promote the principles that made America great in the first place,” he told Peterson.
“I wouldn’t say that I’m, for example, MAGA, or Make America Great Again. I think America is great. I’m more M-A-G, Make America Greater.”
This commitment to political donations comes despite Elon Musk’s earlier statement in March that he did not plan to donate to the Trump or Biden campaigns.
Since then, Biden has dropped out of the race, and Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to be the Democratic nominee.
Elon Musk endorsed Trump following an assassination attempt against the former president at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania earlier this month.
“I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” Musk wrote on X following the shooting on July 13.
In his interview with Jordan Peterson, Elon Musk cited his belief that the Republican Party aligns more closely with his views on meritocracy and individual freedom.
“One of those values being meritocracy, as much meritocracy as possible, so you get ahead as a function of your skill, and nothing else,” Musk explained.
Elon Musk emphasized that his support for Trump is not based on a “cult of personality” but on the former president’s demonstrated “great courage” after surviving the assassination attempt.
“I think we need a change in administration,” Musk concluded.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Elon Musk and Donald Trump have been in more frequent communication in recent months and have developed a friendly rapport.
The report also noted that Trump was aware of a project Musk was organizing to prevent voter fraud.
Elon Musk has been vocal on X, expressing more favorable views towards Trump and criticizing the Biden administration.
“About 3 weeks ago, the media told you that Biden was ‘sharp as a tack,'” Musk wrote on Tuesday, followed by an eye-roll emoji.
“2 days ago, the poor guy was basically forced at gunpoint to resign as Dem nominee. His staff weren’t even informed. Now they say Kamala is the best thing ever,” he added, accompanied by a facepalm emoji.
In addition to his political donations, Elon Musk contributed $100,000 to a GoFundMe page authorized by Trump to support the victims of the campaign rally shooting and their families.
The attack resulted in the death of one attendee who protected his wife and daughter from gunfire, while two other spectators were injured.
