Election Day 2024: Trump and Harris Face Off in Big Showdown As Voting Underway In US

Election Day 2024 has arrived, marking a pivotal moment in American politics as voters cast their ballots in a fierce contest between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

After nearly two years of campaigning, the race for the White House culminates today on the election day as millions head to the polls to decide the nation’s next leader.

Early Voting Sets the Stage

Roughly 78 million ballots had already been cast in early voting across the country, and in-person voting is now underway.

Both Trump and Harris are confident about their chances in this high-stakes election.

Speaking to a crowd in Allentown, Pennsylvania on Monday, Harris declared, “Momentum is on our side. Can you feel it?”.

She reinforced her optimism at another rally in Pittsburgh later that evening, stating, “Make no mistake, we will win.”

Trump, rallying in Pennsylvania as well, shared his own confident message with supporters.

“We’ve been waiting for this. I’ve been waiting four years for this,” he told the crowd, brushing off close polls and touting a “big lead” as his campaign marched toward Election Day.

A Divided Nation Votes On Election Day

The historic tradition of Dixville Notch, a small town in New Hampshire, once again grabbed attention with its midnight vote on Election Day, resulting in a 3-to-3 split.

This small moment echoes the broader contest playing out across seven key battleground states: Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada.

With their razor-thin margins from the 2020 election, these states are expected to decide whether Harris or Trump claims victory tonight.

Pennsylvania, holding 19 electoral votes, is the biggest prize among these battlegrounds.

Harris and Trump both closed out their campaigns with rallies in the Keystone State, underscoring its importance.

Harris addressed supporters in Philadelphia near the famed “Rocky Steps” at the Art Museum, while Trump wrapped up his campaign with a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a location that also marked the end of his 2016 and 2020 campaigns.

Campaign Strategies: A Tale of Two Messages

As their campaigns came to a close, Harris and Trump offered sharply contrasting messages.

Harris, avoiding direct attacks on Trump, focused on a positive vision for the future, emphasizing unity and optimism.

Her message stood in stark contrast to Trump’s, who railed against the policies of the Biden administration, highlighting what he sees as the dangers of unchecked immigration and Democratic governance.

For Trump, the 2024 campaign has been a marathon, marked by legal battles and political victories.

The former president faced multiple indictments but saw his support grow stronger, particularly after becoming the first sitting or former president to be convicted of felonies.

His campaign gained further momentum after surviving an assassination attempt in July, just before the Republican National Convention.

Harris, who only recently became the Democratic nominee after President Biden stepped aside following a debate performance that reignited concerns over his age and health, has ridden a wave of support.

Following the Democratic National Convention in August, Harris saw her poll numbers surge, with many pundits declaring her the winner of her sole debate against Trump in September.

However, the race tightened in October, with Trump regaining his footing and momentum.

Swing States Hold the Key

With the race too close to call, experts like Karl Rove describe the contest as a “coin toss.”

Republican consultant Alex Castellanos has argued that many polls are missing the impact of Republican gains in voter registration, calling it a “massive shift” that could benefit Trump.

Harris, a resident of California, voted by mail ahead of Election Day. Meanwhile, Trump planned to vote in person at Palm Beach, Florida, where he resides.

Both candidates planned to spend Election Day making their final push.

Trump’s campaign announced that the former president would participate in phone-based tele-rallies and planned to host his Election Night event in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Harris was scheduled to conduct radio interviews and hold her Election Night headquarters at her alma mater, Howard University, in Washington, D.C.
