Blake Lively is pursuing legal action against her It Ends with Us co-star and director Justin Baldoni, alleging sexual harassment during the film’s production.
The complaint, filed with the California Civil Rights Department, outlines accusations of inappropriate behavior that Lively claims caused her “severe emotional distress.”
The allegations stem from incidents on the set of the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel.
The complaint paints a troubling picture of the production environment and has reignited conversations about workplace misconduct in Hollywood.
For months, speculation about behind-the-scenes tension plagued the project. Now, Lively’s formal complaint brings specific allegations to light.
According to her representative, Lively experienced retaliation after raising concerns about harassment and misconduct that affected not only her but also other cast and crew members.
“Blake was retaliated against because she raised concerns about sexual harassment and other inappropriate behavior that she and other members of the cast and crew experienced on the set of the film,” her representative stated.
Lively reportedly addressed these issues in a meeting attended by key stakeholders, including her husband, Ryan Reynolds.
During the meeting, she outlined several demands to ensure a safer and more professional working environment.
These demands included prohibiting the display of nude images or videos, ending inappropriate discussions about cast members’ personal matters, and avoiding references to her deceased father.
The complaint accuses Baldoni and his production company, Wayfarer Studios, of launching a campaign to harm Lively’s reputation.
According to the filing, this “social manipulation” effort included alleged text exchanges between Baldoni’s publicist and a Wayfarer representative.
In one alleged text, Baldoni’s publicist is quoted as saying Baldoni wanted to feel that “Ms. Lively can be buried.”
Another message attributed to Baldoni reportedly stated, “We should have a plan for IF she does the same when [the] movie comes out. Plans make me feel more at ease.”
Lively asserts that these actions were intended to discredit her and undermine her standing in the industry.
Justin Baldoni and his legal team have categorically denied the allegations. Bryan Freedman, the attorney representing Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios, issued a statement calling the claims “completely false, outrageous, and intentionally salacious.”
“It is shameful that Ms. Lively and her representatives would make such serious and categorically false accusations against Mr. Baldoni, Wayfarer Studios, and its representatives,” Freedman said.
He further alleged that Lively had engaged in disruptive behavior during production, making demands that threatened the film’s marketing campaign.
Freedman also accused Lively’s team of planting negative stories in the media. “Wayfarer Studios made the decision to hire a crisis manager… to address the multiple demands and threats made by Ms. Lively during production,” Freedman added.
The legal battle casts a shadow over It Ends with Us, a film that tackles themes of domestic and sexual violence.
Lively’s role as a woman navigating an abusive relationship was expected to be a defining performance.
Initially, Baldoni had praised Lively’s involvement, describing her as “integral” to the project.
The film also partnered with a foundation focused on ending domestic and sexual violence, a partnership now under ironic scrutiny given the allegations.
The case adds to the growing list of allegations of misconduct in Hollywood, where power dynamics often leave individuals vulnerable.
While Baldoni’s team denies any wrongdoing, the allegations highlight ongoing challenges in fostering safe and respectful work environments in the industry.
As the legal process unfolds, it remains to be seen how the accusations will impact both Lively’s career and Baldoni’s reputation.
The story also serves as a reminder of the complex dynamics involved in addressing harassment and retaliation in the workplace.
