Black Voters Not a Monolith: Diverse, Powerful Views Emerge on 2024 Harris Vs Trump Race

In a revealing MSNBC special titled “Black Men in America: The Road to 2024,” a group of male Black voters discussed their perspectives on the upcoming presidential election.

Legal analyst Charles Coleman led the discussion, which highlighted diverse opinions among Black voters regarding former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Black Voters for Trump

During the special, Coleman asked the participants if they knew any Black men committed to voting for Trump.

All four participants raised their hands, emphasizing that the emergence of Kamala Harris as the presumptive Democratic nominee had not swayed these men.

One voter mentioned that his friend was supporting Trump because of the “stimulus checks,” while another cited concerns about “interest rates” and the belief that Trump would lower them.

This sentiment reflects a pragmatic approach among some Black voters who prioritize specific economic policies over symbolic representation.

Not a Monolith

Coleman emphasized that Black voters are not a monolith, illustrating an intergenerational conversation with varying perspectives.

He noted that younger voters, who grew up with President Obama, might not be as impressed by Harris’s candidacy purely based on her being a Black woman.

“One of the things that I learned was that there is a sense from some people to just get on the bandwagon regardless of what she is talking about because of the fact that she is a Black woman,” Coleman remarked.

This dynamic indicates a nuanced view within the Black community regarding Harris’s candidacy.

Community Obligation

When asked if they felt a community obligation to support Harris, the responses were mixed.

Corey Alexander, a teacher, acknowledged a push to rally behind Harris, partly due to symbolic reasons and personal benefits like student loan forgiveness.

On the other hand, Curt Quillen, a financial manager, expressed feeling vilified for questioning Harris’s positions.

“It is almost like you are anti-something because you are questioning something,” Quillen said, highlighting the pressure to conform politically without thorough discussion.

Harris vs. Trump: The Verdict

The special also explored the participants’ views on Harris’s chances against Trump in the upcoming election.

Three out of four believed Harris could defeat Trump, while the fourth expressed doubt despite wanting her to win.

Shifting Support

The Democratic Party has historically enjoyed strong support from Black voters. In the 2020 election, Biden secured 87% of the Black vote compared to Trump’s 12%. However, recent trends indicate a potential shift.

A Fox News poll from early July showed only 69% of Black voters supporting Harris in a match-up against Trump, suggesting that Harris might need to work harder to consolidate this crucial demographic.

An Angus Reid Institute survey of 1,743 registered voters, conducted between July 23 and 25, shows that Harris, the presumptive 2024 Democratic nominee, is 2 points ahead of the former president (44 percent to 42) with just over three months until November’s election.

When broken down further, the polls show that more than two-thirds (67 percent) of the 226 Black voters surveyed said they intend on voting for Harris at the 2024 election, compared to 12 percent who said they will be backing Trump.

A total of 17 percent of Black voters said they are still not sure whom they will vote for.

Trump received 8 percent of support from Black voters in 2020, according to Pew Research.

In January, as the country headed into an election year, the former president has between 14 percent and 30 percent of the Black vote share, according to national and swing state polls reviewed by Bloomberg.

Way Forward

The MSNBC special underscored the complexity of Black voters’ opinions heading into the 2024 election.

While some are steadfast in their support for Trump, others feel a sense of duty to back Harris despite reservations.

As the election approaches, the response of black voters will play a critical role in shaping the elections outcome.
