Former Vice President Mike Pence made headlines on Friday by announcing that he will not be endorsing his former boss, Donald Trump, for the upcoming 2024 general election.
Pence’s decision, revealed during an appearance on Fox News, underscores the growing divide within the Republican Party.
During his interview with Fox News host Martha MacCallum, Pence emphasized that he could not, in good conscience, support Trump due to what he described as “profound differences” in their views on various issues.
While Pence refrained from disclosing his intended vote for November, he asserted that he would “never” support President Joe Biden.
Mike Pence criticized Trump for pursuing an agenda that diverges from traditional conservative values, particularly highlighting differences on issues such as the national deficit, abortion, and the recent reversal on the TikTok ban.
He also referenced the events of 6 January 2021, when Trump pressured Mike Pence to reject the election results, leading to a strain in their relationship.
When pressed on his vote for the general election, Mike Pence remained tight-lipped, stating that he would keep his choice private.
He firmly ruled out voting for Biden and dismissed the idea of supporting a third-party candidate, reiterating his allegiance to the Republican Party.
Focus on Conservative Agenda Moving Forward
Looking ahead, Mike Pence emphasized his commitment to promoting a “broad mainstream conservative agenda” that has historically defined the Republican Party.
He acknowledged the decision of Republican primary voters and pledged to advocate for the party’s core principles.
Pence’s Political Advocacy and Criticism of Trump
In recent months, Pence has been actively involved in political advocacy through his organization, Advancing American Freedom.
The group announced plans to invest $20 million in upholding conservatism, seen by some as a veiled critique of Trump and his influence within the party.
Trump’s Reaction and Appeals for Loyalty
Trump, who had previously urged Pence to endorse him, expressed disappointment at Pence’s decision.
He highlighted his role in Pence’s political career and lamented what he perceived as disloyalty, a sentiment he has voiced against other former allies in the past.
