G7 leaders are set to hold a crucial videoconference on Sunday noon to coordinate a unified response following Iran’s recent attack on Israel.
The assault, consisting of a barrage of ballistic missiles and drones, has escalated tensions in the already volatile Middle East region.
Italy, the current holder of the G7 presidency, has taken the initiative to convene the meeting.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the gathering, emphasizing the need for swift and decisive action in response to the attack.
International leaders, including Meloni and U.S. President Joe Biden, have condemned Iran’s actions.
Biden labeled the attack as “an unprecedented air assault against military facilities in Israel” and pledged to coordinate a united diplomatic response among G7 nations.
The Israeli military reported that it intercepted 99 percent of the missiles and drones launched by Iran.
Despite the large-scale attack, U.S. assistance played a crucial role in thwarting the majority of the incoming threats.
In anticipation of potential retaliation from Iran, the U.S. had bolstered its military presence in the region.
President Biden underscored America’s commitment to Tel Aviv’s security, reaffirming ongoing support for its ally.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell echoed concerns over the escalating situation, emphasizing the need for de-escalation and regional security.
Borrell announced plans for a videoconference meeting of EU foreign ministers to address the crisis.
The Israeli government has called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council to address the attack.
Meanwhile, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reiterated America’s commitment to regional stability and support for the Jewish Nation’s defense.
The attack comes at a sensitive juncture in U.S.-Israel relations, marked by recent tensions over Israeli military operations in Gaza.
President Biden has urged the Jewish state to address humanitarian concerns in the region while seeking to prevent the conflict from spreading further.
As the situation continues to unfold, international efforts are underway to de-escalate tensions and ensure stability in the Middle East.
