Baltimore bridge collapses after ship hits its support column
Early Tuesday morning, the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed after a support column was struck by a large container ship that lost power, causing vehicles and individuals to plunge into the Patapsco River, authorities confirmed.
According to Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld, six individuals from a construction crew filling potholes on the bridge remain unaccounted for.
Two other workers were rescued from the water, as reported in a mid-morning news conference.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore declared a state of emergency and pledged to deploy federal resources swiftly.
He expressed gratitude for the efforts of emergency personnel and urged prayers for everyone’s safety.
The vessel involved in the collision, the Singapore-flagged Dali, operated by Synergy Group and chartered by Maersk, reported a power issue prior to the collision, though the cause remains unclear.
Officials confirmed a mayday call had been issued before the incident, enabling traffic onto the bridge to be stopped.
Responding to concerns, FBI officials stated there is no evidence of terrorism involvement in the incident.
The agency is providing support in the form of underwater search and evidence response teams.
The National Transportation Security Board announced the dispatch of a team to investigate the collapse, aiming to determine the causes behind the tragic event.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott described the collapse as “an unthinkable tragedy,” urging prayers for the affected families and gratitude for the swift response of first responders.
Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. echoed the sentiment, asking for prayers for those impacted.
All shipping in and out of the Port of Baltimore has been halted as a result of the bridge collapse.
It remains uncertain how long it will take to rebuild the bridge or resume shipping operations.
Governor Moore emphasized that the primary focus remains on search and rescue efforts.
Traffic to the port has been diverted to alternative routes, causing closures on I-695 with detours to I-95 and I-895.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge, spanning the Patapsco River, serves as a crucial link in Baltimore’s transportation network.
With a daily traffic volume of around 31,000, the 1.6-mile bridge plays a significant role in East Coast shipping, particularly for the Port of Baltimore.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg pledged support for Baltimore, engaging with Governor Moore and Mayor Scott to coordinate efforts.
He advised drivers to adhere to local guidance on detours and response measures.
