Are You Tough Enough for Mars? NASA Wants You for Its Next Mission

NASA is gearing up for its second simulated one-year Mars surface mission, CHAPEA (Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog), scheduled to kick off in spring 2025.

This ambitious endeavor aims to shape the agency’s strategies for the future human exploration of Mars

NASA Mars Dune Alpha Challenge

Volunteers will form a four-person crew within the Mars Dune Alpha, a 3D-printed habitat at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Designed to replicate the harsh conditions of a Mars mission, participants will grapple with resource limitations, equipment failures, communication delays, and various environmental stressors.

Duties will include simulated spacewalks, robotic operations, habitat maintenance, exercise, and crop cultivation.

Who Can Join the Mission?

NASA is actively seeking applications from healthy, motivated U.S. citizens or permanent residents aged 30-55.

Non-smokers proficient in English, applicants should possess a strong desire for unique adventures and an interest in contributing to NASA’s groundbreaking preparations for the inaugural human journey to Mars. The application deadline is Tuesday, 2 April.

Rigorous Candidate Criteria

Prospective candidates must meet NASA’s standard astronaut criteria, including holding a master’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited institution.

Two years of professional STEM experience or a minimum of one thousand hours piloting an aircraft is required.

Consideration will be given to candidates with progress in a doctoral program, a completed medical degree, or a test pilot program.

Compensation details will be disclosed during the screening process.

Artemis Campaign – Bridging Moon and Mars Exploration

As part of NASA’s broader Artemis campaign, CHAPEA missions provide crucial scientific data to validate systems and develop solutions for future Red Planet expeditions.

Leveraging insights from the ongoing first CHAPEA mission, the space agency aims to enhance crew health and performance support during upcoming Mars expeditions.

Under the Artemis campaign, NASA is laying the foundation for sustained scientific exploration on the Moon, with plans to land the first woman, first person of color, and its first international partner astronaut on the lunar surface.

These endeavors are vital preparations for the ultimate goal of human missions to Mars for the benefit of all.
