According to the Russian prison authorities, after a walk he “felt unwell, almost immediately passing out.” Medics arrived right away and attempted to resuscitate him, but failed.
Navalny, 47, was known for his anti-corruption activism and vocal opposition to the Russian government’s policies.
His death marks a significant loss for the Russian opposition movement and raises questions about the future of political dissent in the country.
President Biden said he had “no reason to believe” that reports of Alexei Navalny’s death were fabricated.
He lauded the Russian opposition leader’s resolve to stand by his beliefs, calling Navalny a “powerful voice” for the truth.
“He could have lived safely in exile after the assassination attempt on him in 2020, which nearly killed him,” Biden said. “Instead, he returned to Russia, knowing he’d likely be imprisoned or even killed if he continued his work. But he did it anyway because he believed so deeply in his country.”
